The Government has just published ‘Fit For The Future’, a 10-year plan to transform the provision of healthcare in England.
Packed full of ambitious aims, what is described as a reinvention of the National Health Service is encompassed under three headings:
• From hospital to community – a plan to expand local neighbourhood health services, de-emphasising the focus on hospital care, establishing a neighbourhood health centre ‘in every community’, shifting funding appropriately and training more GPs
• From analogue to digital – aiming ‘to create the most digitally accessible health system in the world’, with a focus on expanding patient services, control and choice through increased use of the NHS App
• From sickness to prevention – aiming to ‘halve the gap in healthy life expectancy between the richest and the poorest regions’ with plans to reduce obesity, reduce alcohol and tobacco consumption, expand free school meals
These shifts in the delivery of healthcare will be underpinned with a new operating model, decentralising commissioning and decision-making, with transparency and an incentivised and empowered workforce and greater use of the latest technology.
Investigating the quality of care, responding to patient feedback, prioritising patient safety and improving the patient experience of clinical negligence claims will all contribute to the avoidance of harm.
