Profile

Julie Glynn: Professional, public, private.

Supporting the vulnerable and standing up for people's rights has always been intrinsic to Julie's view of the world and was a key factor in her deciding to enter the legal profession.

Having graduated with a law degree in the south-east of England, Julie returned to the south-west to complete her training at the University of the West of England, then taking up a position with a leading law firm in Bristol.

In 1983 she decided to establish her own practice and has worked predominantly in personal injury and clinical negligence ever since. A passionate animal-lover, however, Julie also spent over thirty years prosecuting animal cruelty on behalf of the RSPCA.

Determined to improve the experience and rights of victims of medical negligence, Julie was a co-founder of SCIL (Society of Clinical Injury Lawyers) in 2014, spending five years as a member of the Executive and as Treasurer. Bringing together scores of clinical negligence legal firms, SCIL aims to promote best practice in the conduct of clinical negligence claims, to influence public policy for the benefit of injured persons and in doing so promote access to justice and patient safety.

Prior to the formation of SCIL, Julie had been a key member of the Consumer Justice Alliance, a lobbying group organised to fight the sweeping legal costs reforms of 2013, such as the removal of Legal Aid for many vulnerable people who have suffered injury.

Over the years, it has been important to Julie that Glynns supports those struggling with their health in ways which reach beyond the pursuance of compensation. Consequently, the firm has provided grants to both the oncology ward at Bristol Royal Infirmary and to Penny Brohn UK, a Bristol-based charity which provides support to those living with cancer. The firm also supports women who have suffered injury during childbirth and the victims of cauda equina syndrome, a debilitating spinal condition causing dysfunction in the lower body.

Publicly, Julie is a highly active member of her local community, fulfilling roles as Chair of her local Parish Council, as a former school governor at a Special Needs school and as a charity trustee. For the last two years she has been a trustee of the Billy Chip Foundation which facilitates meaningful support for the homeless in Bristol. Glynns Solicitors both promotes and, by way of grants, financially supports this vital organisation.

Julie is also a trustee of Chelwood Community Fund. Launched by Chelwood Community Energy Limited, a community-owned solar farm, the fund supports local charitable causes.

Privately, Julie's passions are her family, her horse, Bo, and rugby. She and her husband, Colin, are regular attenders at both club and international matches.

Reflecting Julie's sporting interests, Glynns has sponsored Old Bristolians Rugby Club Ladies Team and Chew Valley Under-14s football team.
