The Cauda Equina Champions Charity is promoting today, October 16th 2025, as International CES Awareness Day, aiming to increase awareness worldwide of the debilitating nature of this shocking condition and the need for on-going support for those who suffer from it.

The organisation highlights the absolutely crucial need for early diagnosis as the mechanism by which long-term disability can be avoided, aiming to achieve this through increased awareness and education, both for individuals at risk of this condition as well as medical professionals. Supporting people with cauda equina syndrome is an equally important part of their mission, and today is a great opportunity to highlight the support which they are able to offer such as workshops, support groups, their CES App, the CES Healthcare passport, sharing patient stories, providing information, education and, where appropriate, legal advice.

The identification of today as the day on which to focus on cauda equina syndrome deliberately coincides with World Spine Day, a movement to emphasise the importance of spinal health and the disabling problems which can arise within the spine, globally affecting quality of life, work productivity and costing health services considerable sums of money.

Early diagnosis of cauda equina compression is crucial to the best outcome and a delay can prove life-changing, leaving the patient permanently disabled.

Where medical negligence has contributed to a delay in diagnosis and surgery, which has resulted in a worse outcome, a successful compensation claim can address the financial challenges which disability can cause. This can include a significant loss of earnings, as well as the costs of care, treatment, household adaptations and equipment necessary to support the individual in coping with their symptoms and disability.
