The NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA) has revealed the percentage of clinical negligence claims that arose last year according to medical specialism.

The NHSLA’s Report and Accounts 2013/2014 shows the number of claims received in 2013/2014 can be broken down as follows:

  1. 15% – Orthopaedic surgery
  2. 12% – Casualty/A&E
  3. 11% – General surgery
  4. 11% – Obstetrics
  5. 6% – Gynaecology
  6. 6% – General medicine
  7. 3% – Radiology
  8. 2% – Urology
  9. 2% – Paediatrics
  10. 2% – Psychiatry/mental health
  11. 30% – Other (aggregated specialities)

The NHSLA also revealed the value of claims received in 2013/2014 according to medical specialism:

  1. 35% – Obstetrics
  2. 10% – Orthopaedic surgery
  3. 10% – Casualty/A&E
  4. 6% – Paediatrics
  5. 6% – General surgery
  6. 3% – General medicine
  7. 3% – Neurosurgery
  8. 2% – Gynaecology
  9. 2% – Radiology
  10. 2% – Neurology
  11. 21% – Other (aggregated specialities)
