As of 1st April 2019, the NHS will be introducing a new government-backed Clinical Negligence Scheme for General Practice (CNSGP).

The costs of the scheme, which will cover all GPs and other staff working within a GP practice setting, will be met by the NHS.

According to the NHS Resolution website, the new scheme will cover relevant activities from 1st April 2019:

‘arising from an act (or an omission to act) on the part of a GP or any other person working in a general practice setting where that act (or omission) is connected to the diagnosis, care or treatment of the patient; and results in personal loss or injury to the patient.’

GPs are currently responsible for insuring themselves against claims of clinical negligence and the costs of this are thought to be contributing to recruitment problems.
