A report published last month by the Health Services Safety Investigations Body (HSSIB) highlighted the potential impact of a failure to provide necessary medication at an appropriate time.
Paving the way for a national investigation, the report assessed three different scenarios in three different settings, where medication or relevant information needed by the patient had not been given at the appropriate time. These situations related to a failure to administer time-critical medication in an emergency department, a failure of medication monitoring in relation to a procedure in hospital and a failure to provide sufficient medication instructions on discharge.
As emphasised in the report, such an occurrence can prove to be life-changing, and potentially life-threatening.
Where a medication error has occurred which causes a significant impact on the patient, it may be appropriate to make a claim for compensation for the consequences.
At best, a medication error may cause the patient unnecessary discomfort, but in more serious cases, a failure of medication can leave the patient struggling with permanent debilitating symptoms and may even cause their death.
If you or a loved one are trying to cope with the impact of a medication error in a clinical setting, speak to a specialist medical negligence solicitor to discuss the possibility of claiming compensation. Where appropriate, a successful claim will address financial losses such as loss of income and the costs of care and equipment.
