The BBC has reported today on worrying signs that the pressures on the NHS are continuing to rise.

Despite increases in available training places and campaigns aimed at improving recruitment, figures announced by NHS Improvement show that, in key areas, the number of staff vacancies is actually growing.

According to data released by the BBC, over 100,000 posts within the healthcare services are currently vacant, including over 40,000 nursing vacancies and over 10,000 GP vacancies.

The Director of the Royal College of Nursing, quoted on their website, described the situation as ‘unsustainable workforce shortages’.

With increasing demand and the pressures of winter looming, it is difficult to imagine that patients will not suffer from the impact of such staff shortages.
