According to the BBC, Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust has been fined in excess of £1million over the deaths of two patients whilst in its care.

Accused by the Care Quality Commission of exposing patients to significant risk of avoidable harm, the Trust has admitted three counts of failing to provide treatment and care in a safe way, resulting in harm or loss.

One young man died when hospital staff failed to respond appropriately when his dialysis catheter became detached, resulting in fatal blood loss.

Another man died of cardiac arrest after becoming trapped in a specialist bed.

In deciding to fine the Trust, the Senior District Judge described the families of the two victims as having suffered ‘unimaginable grief’ as a result of the Trust’s failures.

Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust has also recently been criticised by Donna Ockenden’s review of maternity services in relation to over two hundred baby deaths between 2000 and 2019, as well as the occurrence of numerous life-changing injuries to mothers and babies whilst under the Trust’s care.
