This month is the 15th Sepsis Awareness Month, raising awareness of the signs of sepsis in a bid to reduce the number of deaths from this life-threatening illness.
September 13th this year, as every year, is World Sepsis Day, aiming to spread awareness, promote prevention and reduce fatalities.
This year has also seen the publication of updated international guidelines for the management of sepsis and septic shock.
This global killer is still a threat and increased awareness of its symptoms and the urgent need for treatment can only help to tackle the illness.
In the UK, the UK Sepsis Trust continues to highlight the number of deaths which are due to sepsis every year. This disabling response to infection can develop rapidly. Where an individual survives, they can continue to struggle with debilitating symptoms for years to come.
Prevention, recognition and a prompt medical response are key to saving lives.
Unfortunately, sepsis continues to prompt claims for compensation for medical negligence where a patient has suffered unnecessarily due to failures of medical management. This might include a failure of risk assessment and monitoring of a patient, a failure to provide prophylactic antibiotics, a failure of diagnosis or treatment of infection, a failure to recognise or suspect symptoms and a delay in treatment.
The consequences can be devastating for the individual and their loved ones.
If such a scenario has affected you or a loved one, contact us to talk about the possibility of making a claim.
