The Department of Health and Social Care has chosen Breast Cancer Now as its first partner in tackling health issues specifically relevant to women, as announced in the Women’s Health Strategy earlier this year.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, aiming to increase awareness of the signs of breast cancer that women should look out for. The new three-year partnership aims to support women in knowing the signs of breast cancer and what actions to take, having easy access to relevant information, and having suitable support following treatment for breast cancer, particularly with regards to recognising any indication that their cancer might be returning.

Additional training is also going to be given to healthcare professionals as well as a toolkit to ensure that women receive the best advice.

The partnership is responding to research by Breast Cancer Now which identifies that many women do not know the signs to look out for or where to get trusted information.

Despite improvements in breast cancer survival rates, early diagnosis is key to the best possible outcome and chances of survival.

A delay in diagnosis, resulting in a worse outcome for the woman affected can be devastating. Treatment options may be restricted and the risk of the spread of the cancer increased.

If negligent medical care has contributed to or caused this terrible outcome, it may be possible to make a claim for compensation, to help the woman address the many and distressing consequences.
