A dramatic increase in waiting times for routine surgery is being associated with new pension rules introduced in 2016, according to the BBC.

New and complex restrictions on the amount consultants can contribute to their pensions are producing unexpected tax bills, prompting some to decline extra work.

The knock-on effect is a delay in routine surgery and increasing waiting lists and waiting times.

The BBC quoted data for April of this year when only 86.5% of patients were treated within 18 weeks. Over four million operations are currently on the waiting list.
