The Royal College of Nursing has launched an advertising campaign, calling for the government to address the problems of the nursing shortage and plan for future safe staffing levels within the NHS.

Their ‘SafeStaffingSavesLives’ campaign calls for investment from government to ensure safe nursing levels in the NHS; for a public body to assess and plan for future nursing requirements; and for the introduction of legislation in England to clarify accountability for safe levels of nursing staff in the future. Such legislation already exists in Wales and Scotland.

Today, the first World Patient Safety Day organised by the World Health Organisation aims to create awareness of patient safety worldwide.

As the number of patients being admitted to hospitals in the UK is increasing, the number of nurses working across the NHS is not keeping pace and there are currently approximately 40,000 nursing vacancies in England.
