According to research by BBC Scotland, numerous former patients are currently pursuing compensation claims for surgical mistakes made by the former head of neurosurgery at NHS Tayside, Sam Eljamel.

The shocking errors revealed include failing to carry out the surgery as planned and operating on the incorrect body part – removing a tear duct instead of a tumour.

Following concerns about Mr Eljamel’s competence, the hospital put him under supervision and asked the Royal College of Surgeons to carry out an investigation of his practice. Their report highlights serious concerns about his working methods.

There are further suggestions that colleagues and juniors had not expressed their concerns about Mt Eljamel’s work due to fears of bullying and intimidation.
