Botched Labia Reduction Surgery

Botched Labia Reduction Surgery

While giving birth to her first child, Joss sustained a hole to her right labia. She decided to have the defect repaired, but sadly the surgeon botched the operation, leaving her with large chunks of labia missing on both sides.

AfterJoss gave birth to her daughter, she was discharged the following day. It was only when she was examined at home by a Community Midwife that a perineal tear was diagnosed. She was also told that she had a hole and a tear on the right side of her labia.

This injury was excruciatingly painful, particularly when urinating. The midwife told Joss that she could return to hospital to have the defect repaired. However, the birth had been so traumatic that she did not feel able to have further treatment at the hospital for the time being.

Consequently Joss lived with the pain for the next five years but eventually she decided she could not continue any longer and asked her GP whether she could be referred back to hospital for a repair.

She soon attended a pre-operative assessment where a gynaecologist explained the procedure. The right labia would be trimmed from the top through the existing hole. The left labia would be trimmed in order to make the appearance even. Joss felt happy with this and was admitted for the operation two days later.

Prior to the surgery she met with a different surgeon who did not explain the procedure again. When she woke from the operation she was in agony and was losing blood. The nurses applied large maternity pads and Joss was in tears, such was the pain.

Joss was discharged but a yellow discharge continued to come from the wound. She visited her GP who examined her and found that the sutures had come out and the right labia was in two parts. There was also a hole in the left labia.

When the swelling went down Joss could see that there was a large part missing from the right side of the labia. It was cut in half, and the left labia had a hole in it, even though it was previously uninjured. This is because the surgeon had performed a wedge resection, rather than simply trimming the labia. Joss had not consented to this procedure, which has a high risk of failure.

As a result, Joss continued to suffer pain and discomfort.

Joss did go on to have another operation in an attempt to repair the damage. However, she is not happy with the appearance and has suffered great psychological trauma because of her experience.

We helped Joss make a claim for the negligent surgery she experienced. She was awarded over £18,000 compensation.
