The Society of Clinical Injury Lawyers (SCIL)

Clinical Injury Law is currently experiencing wide-ranging changes, and the interests of the claimants affected by clinical negligence need to be represented and protected throughout those changes.

SCIL's Objectives

The Society of Clinical Injury Lawyers was established in 2013 as an organisation to represent the views of its members, clinical injury lawyers working with those who are claiming compensation for the effects of clinical negligence.

The objectives of the society are identified as follows:

  • To act as a representative body for specialist clinical negligence firms acting for claimants;
  • To promote best practice in the context of clinical negligence claims
  • To influence public opinion
  • To provide access to justice to clinical negligence claimants

Julie Glynn, of Glynns Solicitors, is a founding member and current treasurer of the society.

Members of SCIL work closely to share their knowledge and consider how to represent their clients' best interests.

Campaigns

Since its foundation, SCIL has endeavoured to work with a wide range of key organisations and the media to put forward the views of the claimants in the field of clinical negligence law. It has also been heavily involved in responding to government proposals regarding changes in the law.

A specific focus has been the on-going campaign against the introduction of fixed recoverable costs in clinical negligence law which, the society argues, will result in the most vulnerable in society being unable to pursue vital and valid clinical negligence claims because their solicitors will be unable to cover their costs.

SCIL members have recently spent a day at the Palace of Westminster, lobbying their MPs to ensure that the arguments against fixed recoverable costs are being heard by those most able to influence future legislation.

SCIL continues to argue that the best way to reduce the costs in clinical negligence cases is for the NHS to acknowledge their mistakes, learn from those mistakes and improve procedures so that there are fewer instances of clinical negligence in the first place.
