Surgical Error Leading To Amputation

Surgical Error Leading To Amputation

If a major artery is damaged during surgery and the blood supply is not restored, it could lead to a lower limb amputation. If this has happened to you or your loved one, please get in touch with us today.

Surgical error and amputation

Surgeons can make mistakes during operations and these errors will not always be considered negligent. However, if the surgeon acts in a way that is unacceptable, and this harms the patient, there will be a case of medical negligence.

It is very likely this will apply to any patient who has undergone a lower limb amputation as a result of surgical error. This happens when the surgeon accidentally damages a major artery and does not, or cannot, repair the injury.

Consequently the blood supply to the legs will be compromised, leading to a deficiency in oxygen. Eventually the lack of oxygen will cause the tissues in the legs to breakdown and become gangrenous. By this stage it may not be possible to restore the tissue and an amputation will be necessary.

Claiming compensation

Evidently amputation is a shocking consequence of surgical error. The patient will be admitted to hospital for surgery, only to fall critically ill with lower limb ischaemia and taken back to theatre for an emergency amputation.

Nothing can prepare someone for such a life-changing complication. A patient may be wheelchair-bound or have a prosthetic leg(s). He/she will no longer be able to carry out the simple tasks that were once taken for granted, and their injuries may also have a devastating that continuing with employment is not possible.

We understand that nothing can turn back the clock and undo the damage that has been sustained. Even so, pursuing a claim against the negligent hospital can provide some redress, and will recover the financial loss that has been incurred.
