Negligent Sepsis Due to Delayed Diagnosis of a Ruptured Appendix

Appendicitis complications

Located in the lower right-hand side of the abdomen, the appendix is attached to the large intestine or colon. If it becomes inflamed, as can occasionally happen, it is often necessary for it to be surgically removed. A failure to diagnose the problem and resolve it accordingly can lead to a burst appendix and the potential for the patient to develop the life-threatening illness that is sepsis.

Forming part of the digestive tract, the appendix contains bacteria. In normal circumstances, this remains within the appendix. If the appendix is ruptured, however, due to the pressure of inflammation, the bacteria can leak into the abdominal cavity where it would not normally be found.

In this location, it can become life-threatening. The lining of the abdomen, the peritoneum, can become infected by the escaped bacteria, triggering sepsis.

Sepsis as a result of a burst appendix

Sepsis is one of the biggest causes of death worldwide and can rapidly threaten the patient's life, prompting multiple organ failure.

As sepsis is often triggered by abdominal infection, it is essential that any abdominal condition which might lead to this catastrophic outcome is diagnosed and treated as a matter of urgency.

Diagnosing appendicitis

Abdominal pain is not uncommon and can be caused by a wide range of conditions, some considerably more serious than others. It is imperative that those conditions which can ultimately be life-threatening are not mistaken for a less serious illness. A misdiagnosis could prove fatal.

Symptoms which might be indicative of appendicitis would include pain, which could focus on the lower right region of the abdomen as well as possible nausea and vomiting.

A failure to refer a patient with possible appendicitis symptoms for further tests may be regarded as negligent care. Should the patient subsequently suffer a burst appendix and a poor long-term outcome, their long-term health and well-being may well be severely compromised. In such circumstances, it may be appropriate to make a claim for compensation.
