Bladder Surgery Negligence

As with all operations, bladder surgery carries the risk of complications. However, when these complications arise as a result of mistakes made by the surgical team, a patient will understandably feel upset about the poor level of treatment provided. If this has happened to you, you need to speak to a medical negligence solicitor, as there may be action you can take.

Common Types of Bladder Surgery

A patient may need to undergo bladder surgery for any number of reasons, some of the most common of which include:-

  • Investigative surgery – ie. for cancer;
  • Removal of cancerous tumours;
  • Removal of bladder stones;
  • Improve urinary incontinence;
  • Treat a prolapsed bladder;
  • Treat interstitial cystitis.

Complications of Bladder Surgery

All surgery carries a risk of complications, and bladder surgery is no different. Before the operation, you should be advised by your healthcare team of all the potential risks, allowing you to decide whether or not you wish to proceed. This is known as gaining informed consent, and is something medical professionals should do before all forms of surgery.

Thus before bladder surgery, you should be told there is a risk of complications, which amongst other things may include:-

  • Infection;
  • Perforation of the bladder;
  • Perforation of other organs;
  • Danger of causing/exacerbating urinary incontinence.

Bladder Surgery and Medical Negligence

If something goes wrong during bladder surgery and a patient is left in a worse condition than before, it may be that there was an incident of medical negligence. This may arise from events such as:-

  • Failing to diagnose bladder cancer;
  • Causing internal damage – eg. perforation of the bladder or damaging the surrounding tissue;
  • Causing the onset of symptoms that were not previously present – eg. urinary incontinence;
  • Carrying out surgery that was unnecessary and/or could have been avoided.

What Action Can You Take?

It is more than likely that if you have undergone bladder surgery during which mistakes were made, you will be suffering from additional physical effects, not to mention further emotional symptoms such as distress and anxiety.

That is why if you believe you have been the victim of medical negligence during bladder surgery, you should speak to a solicitor to discuss what action you may like to take. A legal expert specialising in medical negligence will be able to listen to the nature of your case before advising whether or not you will be able make a claim. That is because to do so, it must be proven that a healthcare professional breached their duty of care, and that this breach caused you to suffer as a result.

If the treatment you received if though to have fallen below an acceptable standard, your solicitor will guide you through the process from start to finish. Should you be successful, you will receive compensation for the damage you have experienced – both in terms of physical injuries, and in terms of lost finances.
