Negligent Care of Necrotising Fasciitis in the Limbs

Necrotising fasciitis frequently develops in one of the limbs, either upper or lower. Effective and emergency medical care is crucial.

Necrotising fasciitis in the limbs

Although necrotising fasciitis can occur anywhere in the body, it is most common in the abdominal region and the limbs. This can mean either the legs, the arms or the hands and fingers.

Where the infection commences in a limb it can sometimes lead to the need for that limb to be removed, either partly or fully, in order to prevent the further spread of the infection, and so reduce the mortality risk to the patient.

It may mean the loss of a finger or it may mean the loss of an arm or leg.

The on-going impact can, understandably, be life-changing and psychologically distressing. The individual affected may well find that they are no longer able to work in their previous type of employment or can only manage limited hours or may be unable to work at all. The resulting impact on their income can be considerable and, where medical negligence has played a part in this devastating outcome the patient would be entitled to compensation.

It may also be that a person's home becomes impossible to navigate without significant adjustments or that they need additional personal support to carry out daily tasks. A compensation claim would take account of these costs if they are considered to be a result of substandard or negligent medical care.

Negligent medical care

Negligent care of necrotising fasciitis would include any delay in diagnosis or the initiation of treatment which resulted in a worse outcome for the patient.

Necrotising fasciitis is a medical emergency and a failure to recognise or suspect the possible symptoms resulting in a delayed diagnosis may be regarded as negligent. A delay in referring a patient with possible symptoms for further investigation will cause a delay in the debridement surgery necessary to halt this appalling infection.

A delay in initiating treatment may also be regarded as negligent.
