Compensation for Missed Necrotising Fasciitis Emergency

Compensation for Missed Necrotising Fasciitis Emergency

Necrotising fasciitis is a medical emergency. Delays in diagnosis and treatment can cause devastating long-term symptoms. It can also prove fatal.

Claiming compensation for medical negligence

If a patient suffers a poor long-term outcome due to substandard medical care, the law entitles them to claim compensation for the impact of the negligence.

As well as compensating the patient's pain and suffering, a successful claim will take account of any financial losses experienced by the patient which would not have occurred with appropriate medical care.

If you or a loved one are suffering the effects of necrotising fasciitis due to negligent medical care, contact a specialist solicitor to discuss the suitability of making a claim.

A medical emergency

Necrotising fasciitis is a medical emergency.

Once the causative bacteria have entered the body, this soft-tissue infection can spread rapidly through the body's connective tissue, causing destruction and decay.

Delays in diagnosis and treatment will inevitably allow this appalling illness to cause greater tissue loss, deformity and disability. The chances of survival will diminish and the need for invasive and destructive surgery will increase.

A failure to recognise possible symptoms or to consider a possible diagnosis of necrotising fasciitis may be regarded as negligent.

A delay in referring a patient for further investigation and treatment may be regarded as negligent.

A delay in initiating may be regarded as negligent.

Signs and symptoms of necrotising fasciitis

The bacteria which cause this destructive infection require access to the body's deep soft tissue so a necrotising fasciitis infection is usually associated with an injury causing a wound or cut, such as an accident, an injection site or a surgical incision.

The patient may be experiencing intense pain in the region of a cut. The area of the body affected, often the abdomen or the limbs, may also be swollen, tender and discoloured.

The patient may also be showing signs of infection such as a fever or chills and rapid breathing.

If necrotising fasciitis is suspected, surgery to remove all infected tissue must be initiated as quickly as possible.
