Amputation Due to Delayed Necrotising Fasciitis Treatment

It seems inconceivable that an infection can leave an individual requiring the amputation of a limb. Where this shocking outcome is the result, in full or in part, of negligent medical care, it might be possible to make a claim for compensation.

Amputations and necrotising fasciitis

Necrotising fasciitis, the life-threatening soft-tissue infection, often commences in one of the limbs, either upper or lower.

As a swift-spreading infection, it is sometimes necessary to remove part or all of an infected limb in order to prevent the further spreading of the condition.

The earlier this appalling infection is recognised and diagnosed, the sooner treatment can begin and the better the outcome will be for the patient.

Delays in diagnosis and surgery will almost inevitably mean that the patient's condition deteriorates and increase the likelihood that the patient will need a limb to be removed.

The impact of amputation

The effective functioning of our limbs is fundamental to the way in which we live and work. Our ability to negotiate our way around our home, to remain independent physically, to care for our children, to carry out household tasks and to work are frequently dependent on this function.

The loss of a limb, totally or partially, will affect almost every aspect of a person's life and can result in both financial losses and increased expenses.

The vast majority of forms of employment are dependent in one way or another on the ability to use our limbs. A sudden loss of that ability may well mean that the person affected can no longer work or is restricted in the nature or duration of employment they can undertake.

They may also no longer be able to manage effectively in their own home and may require alternative accommodation or for significant alterations to be carried out to their existing home.

Claiming compensation

If an individual suffers such appalling consequences because of negligent medical care, they are entitled to make a claim for compensation.

A failure to recognise or suspect the symptoms of necrotising fasciitis will mean that crucial surgical treatment is delayed.

If this delay causes the patient to suffer an amputation which would not have been the case with effective and timely care, they may wish to make a claim.
