Supporting People With Cauda Equina Syndrome

Anyone with cauda equina syndrome will tell you that it is a physically debilitating condition. Added to the psychological shock of developing a life-changing condition, it can be extremely difficult to manage the varying and devastating effects.

Someone with complete cauda equina syndrome will be experiencing the following appalling symptoms:

  • Loss of bowel control
  • Loss of bladder control
  • Loss of lower limb mobility
  • Loss of sexual function

Coping with such a disabling combination of severe symptoms requires as much support as possible.

Cauda Equina Champions Charity and Awareness Day 2022

The Cauda Equina Syndrome Association and Champions Charity supports people with cauda equina syndrome. Providing broad-ranging information on how to cope with the practical effects of cauda equina syndrome as well as offering support groups and a voice to those affected, it was founded by and is run by people who have experience of cauda equina syndrome.

From September 19th to October 1st 2022, CESA will be running two weeks of themed days via their website and social media, focussing on the many aspects of this devastating condition. It will culminate in their annual Cauda Equina Awareness Day on October 1st.

Legal compensation for negligent medical care

If the severity of your outcome from cauda equina syndrome has been made worse by negligent medical care, we here at Glynns Solicitors can support you in making a claim for compensation.

A successful claim can take account, not only of your pain and suffering, but of the financial impact of the negligence. If negligent care has left you or a loved one unable to work or restricted in the hours or type of work you can manage, the associated loss of income would be addressed within a claim.

Negligence in relation to cauda equina syndrome may relate to the following which can cause a significant delay in the process of diagnosis and mean that surgery is delayed beyond the point where a good outcome may be feasible.

  • A failure to recognise or suspect symptoms causing a misdiagnosis and delay in surgery
  • A failure to provide red flag warnings
  • A delay in making a referral for an MRI scan
  • A delay in arranging surgery
