Spinal Nerve Compression Misdiagnosed in Cauda Equina Syndrome

Compression of the nerves in the spine can, if diagnosis is delayed, cause permanent and life-changing disability.

Essential nerve function

As the conduits of messages of sensation and movement between the brain and every other part of the body, healthy nerves are crucial to effective human function.

If medical professionals misdiagnose, fail to diagnose or otherwise delay the receipt of treatment for compressed nerves, they may be regarded as having provided negligent care. It may be appropriate to make a claim for compensation for the long-term effects.

Cauda equina nerves and their role in lower body function

The cauda equina nerves in the lumbar region at the base of the spine detect sensation in the lower body as well as initiating movement and function.

If the cauda equina nerves become compressed and start to lose their function, an individual requires emergency diagnosis and surgery.

Without this they may suffer permanent complications including the following:

  • Bowel incontinence of both wind and faeces
  • Loss of bladder sensation and continence
  • Loss of lower body mobility
  • Loss of sexual sensation and function

Misdiagnosis and its implications

A misdiagnosis of the possible symptoms of cauda equina syndrome will inevitably lead to a delay in surgery. Unfortunately, surgery for cauda equina compression is often regarded as an emergency and a delay may allow the patient to suffer further function losses.

The early symptoms, such as lower back and leg pain, may be misdiagnosed as sciatica but further assessment is required in case additional symptoms justify a referral for an MRI scan.

For example, if leg symptoms are progressive and bilateral or if the patient is also experiencing sensation losses in the saddle area or urinary difficulties, they may, in fact, be developing cauda equina syndrome. If medical professionals fail to carry out such an assessment, they may be regarded as negligent. If the patient suffers significant function losses as a result, it may be possible to make a claim for the difficulties caused by the negligence.

Where a clinical assessment does not justify a referral for an MRI scan, it may nonetheless be appropriate to provide the red flag warnings to the patient ensuring that they know what symptoms should prompt them to attend hospital as a matter of emergency.

A failure to provide such safety-netting may also be regarded as negligent.
