Cauda Equina Deterioration and Compensation for Negligent Medical Delays

Cauda Equina Deterioration and Compensation for Negligent Medical DelaysSpeak to a specialist solicitor if your MRI results have been misinterpreted, leaving you with cauda equina syndrome.

The MRI scan and cauda equina compression

The MRI scan is a crucial part of the process of diagnosis for cauda equina syndrome. This is necessary to identify whether or not the patient's symptoms are being caused by compression of the cauda equina nerves. If the results of the MRI scan are incorrectly interpreted or incorrectly reported, the patient may feel reassured about the nature of their problem when, in fact, they are in danger of developing permanent lower body disability.

An MRI scan which shows that the patient's cauda equina nerves are being squashed or compressed may need emergency decompression surgery within hours.

If the compression is not resolved, it can worsen over a very short time, causing the patient to lose control of their bladder and bowel as well as their sexual function and sensation and their mobility.

Medical negligence and the MRI scan

Compensation claims for cauda equina syndrome often relate to delays at an earlier stage of diagnosis when a patient encounters their GP but, occasionally, we come across a case where the interpretation of the MRI scan is at fault.

If a medical professional is responsible for misinterpreting the results of an MRI scan, they may be regarded as responsible for the function losses which the patient develops from that point, which they would not have suffered with earlier correct diagnosis followed by surgery.

When to claim compensation

A patient is legally entitled to claim compensation if negligent medical care has left them suffering a worse outcome than would have been the case with an appropriate level of care.

Where cauda equina syndrome is concerned, the difference in outcome can be devastating, altering the entire course of a person's life.

Contact a specialist solicitor if you think that you or a loved one have suffered from negligent care. Remember that these claims are associated with a three-year deadline from the date of the alleged negligence. So, don't delay before contacting a solicitor as there is lot of expert analytical work to be done before the deadline.
