GP Negligence - Prescriptions
Our client Jenny was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid in 1976. In about 2002 she was then diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and was treated with Thyroxin. She attended her GP regularly for blood tests. In 2004 her thyroid test results changed. During 2006 she visited her GP reporting a change in her symptoms. Jenny was told that her GP was not concerned about it and she should continue to be treated for an underactive thyroid. She was sent to Hospital for an x-ray and she was told by her GP that there were no problems.
In January 2007 Jenny attended the A&E Department with tightness in her chest and vomiting blood. She was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid and cardiomyopathy. The insurers for Jenny’s GP admitted that in light of the repeated thyroid function test during 2004 -2006 showing a suppressed TSH and rising T4, she should have been advised to reduce the dose of her Thyroxine. This would have resulted in her stopping the medication some time after January 2005 and breach of duty with respect to the continued prescribing of Thyroxine inappropriately was admitted.
Her case settled for £4,000.00 on the basis of symptoms she experienced by becoming thyrotoxic from January 2005 to the 20 January 2007 being the date of her admission to hospital and the period of her hospital admission on 20 January 2007 to her discharge on 29 January 2007 with more severe symptoms.
