{"id":663,"date":"2016-01-08T08:12:13","date_gmt":"2016-01-08T08:12:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.glynns.co.uk\/blog\/?p=663"},"modified":"2016-01-04T16:15:07","modified_gmt":"2016-01-04T16:15:07","slug":"nursing-shortage-in-92-of-englands-hospitals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.glynns.co.uk\/blog\/nursing-shortage-in-92-of-englands-hospitals\/","title":{"rendered":"Nursing Shortage in 92% of England\u2019s Hospitals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Hospitals in England do not have enough nurses, with most failing to reach their own targets for levels of safe staffing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The Health Service Journal reviewed the average number of nurses working across the 225 acute hospital trusts in England during August 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">It found that 92% of hospitals did not have the intended level of nursing staff during the day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The analysis also showed that 81% of hospitals did not reach nursing level targets during the night, and 79% failed to reach targets during both day and night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Nursing shortages have been a serious problem for the NHS, with many hospitals having to use expensive agency staff and recruit from overseas, just to provide safe staffing levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Chief executive of the Royal College of Nursing Janet Davies says the NHS is recovering from the government\u2019s cost-cutting policies, which saw a temporary cap on the number of trainee nurses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u201cWe went through a period of time where we were trying to save money. We cut posts, we didn\u2019t train enough nurses and we\u2019re still feeling the effect of that\u201d, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve a long way to go. We\u2019ve got to catch up on this for some time. But equally, we have to keep the nurses we\u2019ve already got.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u201cIt\u2019s great to train people, it\u2019s great to bring people in, but our experienced nurses are leaving. They\u2019re leaving because they\u2019re overtired.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">She added that nurses are so overworked they cannot provide comprehensive care. \u201cThey do get very concerned because they know what they should be doing for patients and if they can\u2019t, it\u2019s really upsetting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">This echoes a survey recently conducted by the Nursing Times, where 80% of nurses said they were under more stress at work that a year ago. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">More than half felt they \u2018rarely\u2019 or \u2018never\u2019 had enough time to provide safe care, and a third said their team was \u2018always\u2019 short-staffed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Nursing care claims<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">If you would like to talk to a solicitor about substandard nursing care, please get in touch with us at Glynns Solicitors. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hospitals in England do not have enough nurses, with most failing to reach their own targets for levels of safe staffing.
