A government review has found better efficiency could save the NHS \u00a3400m a year. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The report by Lord Carter reveals tax-payers\u2019 money is being wasted unnecessarily on excessive staff holidays, poor treatment choices and expensive medical items.<\/span><\/p>\n

It comes after the Conservative party\u2019s pledge to spend an additional \u00a38 billion a year on managing the ageing population.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a317 million on expensive hip replacements <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The Labour peer spent last year studying 22 leading hospitals to see how the NHS spends its funds. <\/span><\/p>\n

His recently published interim report has revealed numerous examples of inefficient practice, including one hospital who was losing \u00a310,000 every month due to staff claiming too much annual leave.<\/span><\/p>\n

Procuring the best value-for-money supplies and medicines was also an issue, with huge variations in the amount hospitals paid for the most basic of items. <\/span><\/p>\n

One hospital spent \u00a32.39 on a pair of latex gloves, as opposed to another which spent \u00a35.44. <\/span><\/p>\n

Needlessly expensive hip replacements alone are said to be costing the NHS \u00a317 million every year. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hips used in the more costly procedures do not last as long as the cheaper versions of the artificial joint. Consequently greater numbers of patient need follow-up care and repeat procedures in the future. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPaying over the odds\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Now the report has been published, each hospital will be given money-saving targets and will be publically rated according to how efficiently it spends money. <\/span><\/p>\n

A template for a \u2018model hospital\u2019 will also be published in September.<\/span><\/p>\n

If Lord Carter\u2019s recommendations are followed, it is thought the NHS could save \u00a3400m every year, while more cost-effective procurement could save \u00a31 billion by 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n

Heath Secretary Jeremy Hunt said he wanted hospitals to avoid \u201cpaying over the odd for basic items\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThe NHS has huge purchasing power as the world\u2019s biggest buyer of healthcare products, so we should be driving for the best-value deals every time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
