An investigation has been ordered after surgeons raised concerns about the performance of a new eye implant.<\/p>\n
Patients who have undergone corrective eye surgery to improve their sight have reported serious problems, including worsening eyesight and trouble seeing things at a distance.<\/p>\n
The complaints all relate to a new implant which was introduced to the UK last year called Mplus X. It is aimed at middle-aged patients as an alternative to wearing bi-focal glasses.<\/p>\n
The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has now ordered an investigation after performance fears were raised by doctors.<\/p>\n
George Settas, formerly an eye surgeon, said that \u201cpatients were complaining that they couldn\u2019t see clearly, usually at a distance. Most were saying that they could read but that they could not see properly beyond their arm\u2019s length.\u201d<\/p>\n
German manufacturer Oculentis, which makes Mplux X, has denied a fault with the implant. It says that poor outcomes are the fault of the surgeon, or because the lens is not appropriate for the patient.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the MHRA said: \u201cWe are currently investigating and will take action if necessary. If patients have any questions they should speak to their optometrist or surgeon.\u201d<\/p>\n
