An inquest has been held into the death of a Bristol woman who died after a pharmacy gave her the wrong medication.<\/p>\n
Dawn Britton, aged 62, was given tablets for diabetes, despite not having the condition.<\/p>\n
The gliclazide tablets caused her to suffer profound hypoglycaemia, where the blood sugar levels fall to a dangerously low level. This resulted in a hypoxic brain injury, from which she died.<\/p>\n
At a one-day inquest, the coroner found Mrs Britton\u2019s death was due to her taking the medication which had been dispensed in \u201cerror by a pharmacist.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jhoots Pharmacy, who gave Mrs Britton the tablets, admitted there had been \u201ca dispensing error\u201d. The pharmacy alleges that a locum failed to follow correct procedures, although this is disputed by the locum in question.<\/p>\n
Mrs Britton\u2019s daughter, Tammy Haskins, described the \u201cdevastating impact\u201d her mother\u2019s death had had on the family.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven now, when I think about how she died, I still can\u2019t believe it\u201d, she said. \u201cIt is something you don\u2019t think will ever happen to your family.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHow on earth could this happen? I go through so many emotions when I think about it. I am gutted and upset, but I am also still angry. Mum should still be here today.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNothing can bring my mother back now, but the least I hope comes from this is a tightening of procedures across the board so that it doesn\u2019t happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n
The family are now pursuing legal action against the pharmacy which erroneously dispensed the drug.<\/p>\n
