A new report by the BBC has emphasised just how important it is to diagnose cancer as promptly as possible.<\/p>\n

The recent death of a woman from pancreatic cancer who had pursued a diagnosis for five years highlights the need for early recognition in particular of those cancers which are hardest to treat.<\/p>\n

This includes lung cancer, oesophageal cancer as well as cancer of the liver, brain, pancreas and stomach.<\/p>\n

Late diagnosis of these cancers is associated with a poor long-term outcome and high mortality rate.<\/p>\n

If cancer is not diagnosed until the patient has reached Stage 4 of the disease, by which time it has started to spread to elsewhere in the body, treatment is likely to be more aggressive and less successful.<\/p>\n
