The Royal College of Nursing has this month published its report into key nursing-related pressures on the provision of healthcare by the NHS.<\/p>\n
Called \u201810 Unsustainable Pressures on the Health and Care System in England\u2019, the report uses data from all aspects of healthcare to demonstrate the degree of stress currently affecting the NHS.<\/p>\n
The report analyses the following areas of pressure which show the increasing problems which, in the eyes of the report, make the provision of care unsustainable in its current form:<\/p>\n
\u2022\tNHS bed occupancy rates
\n\u2022\tSickness absence amongst nurses
\n\u2022\tNHS nursing vacancy rate
\n\u2022\tCovid-19 infection rates
\n\u2022\tNHS hospital waiting times
\n\u2022\tNHS elective\/community waiting times
\n\u2022\tSocial care workforce vacancies
\n\u2022\tInternational recruitment in the NHS
\n\u2022\tInsufficient domestic NHS and social care nursing supply
\n\u2022\tIncreased demand for social care services<\/p>\n
As examples of their concerns, the report refers to the current nursing vacancy rate at around 40,000 and the 50% increase in four-hour waiting times from approximately 80,000 people in October 2019 to 121,000 people in October 2021.<\/p>\n
The report observes that \u2018the Government must take action to invest in a number of measures to develop a sustainable nursing workforce supply to meet the needs of the population\u2019.<\/p>\n
