The MASIC Foundation has recently launched its new Helpline, offering support to women who have suffered a severe birth tear during vaginal childbirth.<\/p>\n

The MASIC Foundation works to raise awareness of the difficulties experienced by Mothers with Anal Sphincter Injuries in Childbirth.<\/p>\n

Suffering a perineal tear is a risk of vaginal childbirth and, for most women, this causes a fairly small injury. For a minority, however, a severe tear, also described as a third or fourth degree tear, may occur causing appalling injury and on-going symptoms.<\/p>\n

A 3rd or 4th degree tear causes damage to the anal sphincter, the muscles which control bowel function. Damage to these muscles can leave a woman facing the distress and disability of both wind and faecal incontinence. This means that she may not be able to prevent the accidental passing of wind and faeces.<\/p>\n
