The recent GIRFT Programme National Specialty Report on Diabetes has identified the need for better, co-ordinated and specialist care of patients in hospital with diabetes.<\/p>\n

The report is the product of a national review, assessing diabetes care at more than one hundred NHS Trusts in England, and makes fifteen recommendations aimed at supporting people with diabetes and improving diabetes care.<\/p>\n

A key recommendation is the establishment of a \u2018dedicated multi-disciplinary inpatient diabetes team\u2019 in every Trust, overseeing and monitoring the care of patients with diabetes.<\/p>\n

Other recommendations relate to diabetic footcare, training, reducing the risk of insulin administration errors, the need for clear care pathways and patient self-management.<\/p>\n

The GIRFT Programme (Getting It Right First Time) aims to improve the quality of healthcare delivered by the NHS through identifying and sharing best practice, encouraging consistency of care and reducing unnecessary expenditure.<\/p>\n
