Parliament\u2019s Health and Social Care Committee has launched an inquiry into the quality of maternity services in England.<\/p>\n
In part, this follows years of revelations of poor-quality care leading to the deaths of both babies and mothers in a range of NHS hospitals across the country such as Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust, Basildon University Hospital and Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals amongst others.<\/p>\n
It is also intended to assess why some Trusts appear to be failing to learn from their mistakes. Despite the outcomes of inspections and recommendations, the expected improvement does not always follow. This was demonstrated recently by the Care Quality Commission\u2019s observation that East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust requires more positive changes to be made.<\/p>\n
The committee will gather evidence from a range of interested parties including first-hand accounts of poor-quality care, as well as the views of leaders of maternity services in England, the CQC and organisations such as AvMA, the patient safety charity Action Against Medical Accidents.<\/p>\n
The committee will be receiving evidence until the end of this month, October 2020.<\/p>\n
