Newly-released statistics are beginning to indicate the effect that the Covid-19 pandemic has been having on other areas of medicine and healthcare.<\/p>\n
As reported by the BBC, the British Heart Foundation has estimated that around 28,000 heart-related procedures, such as diagnosis tests and stent implementation, have been delayed during the virus outbreak.<\/p>\n
The associate medical director of the BHF, Dr Babu-Narayan, is reported as saying, \u201cIf hospital investigations and procedures are delayed too long, it can result in preventable permanent long-term complications, such as heart failure.\u201d<\/p>\n
Similarly, the NHS performance figures on cancer care also reveal a significant decline in the number of patients receiving much-needed procedures or tests. Waiting times for treatment rose dramatically in April of this year in comparison with April 2019.<\/p>\n
In addition, the number of patients being assessed for cancer fell, estimated to be a drop of approximately 60 per cent.<\/p>\n
The chair of the British Medical Association council, Dr Chaand Nagpaul, commented that \u201cthe longer the backlog persists, patients\u2019 conditions will grow more acute or go undiagnosed.\u201d<\/p>\n
