A survey of 8,000 doctors reported by The Times recently has highlighted concerns amongst the medical profession regarding the connection between under-funding of the health service and patient safety.<\/p>\n
According to the survey, 78% of doctors thought that under-funding significantly affected quality and safety in the NHS and 74% went so far as to suggest that financial targets were prioritised over patient care.<\/p>\n
In the British Medical Association\u2019s response to the recent NHS funding increase announced by the Prime Minister, their Head of Policy, Jonathan Ware, has described Teresa May\u2019s announcement of an extra \u00a320 billion for the NHS over the next five years as falling short of what is needed. He observed that, whether the proposed increase is compared with European health funding, historical funding figures or the anticipated rise in demand for health care in the UK, the funding increase will be insufficient.<\/p>\n
As further reported by The Times, the chairman of the BMA, Chaand Nagpaul, stated \u201cWe know the NHS has been systematically and scandalously starved of resources for years. It lacks doctors, it lacks nurses, it lacks beds\u2026. All this is inevitably affecting patient safety.\u201d<\/p>\n
