Negligent Surgery Leads To Six Months Of Pain
Monique was undergoing surgery to correct aspects of her hand deformity. This was supposed to relieve the pain she had lived with her all life, but sadly the surgeon overlooked certain elements of the operation, meaning Monique continued to suffer.
Monique was born with a hand deformity, which was caused due to the bones in her left hand failing to grow. This resulted in her having a stunted thumb and first finger and small ‘buds’ for her other fingers. Additionally, the bone that should have been her little finger stuck out the side of her hand – something which Monique found extremely painful, particularly if she caught it on anything.
She continued to live with her deformity until she was 13 years old, when she began to consider surgery. Monique was referred to a Consultant Surgeon, who told her it would be possible to move the first and second fingers so they had more grip, while the fifth finger could be trimmed to reduce the protrusion from the side of her hand.
Monique was put on the waiting list for the operation. Eighteen months later, when she was studying for her GCSEs, she was finally admitted to hospital for surgery. When she came round from the anaesthetic, Monique felt very unwell and was convinced that her little finger had not been trimmed. This in turn was rubbing against the plaster cast wrapped around her hand, causing her a large amount of pain. She informed medical staff, but she was simply told the operation had gone well.
Six weeks later she returned to see the Consultant Surgeon to have the dressings removed. It was immediately evident the fifth finger had not been trimmed, as had been originally planned. Furthermore, Monique no longer had any sensation in her first finger, which was badly infected.
After an official complaint was made against the surgeon, Monique was subsequently referred to a different consultant. This second hand surgeon told her another operation would be necessary so that her bone could be trimmed and additional corrections made. This was duly carried out six months later, and while Monique was pleased with the results, the sensation she had lost in her first finger unfortunately never returned.
After contacting Glynns to discuss the treatment she received during her first operation, we helped Monique file a medical negligence claim. She was awarded £1,500 for the pain and suffering she had experienced over a six month period, which had been directly caused by the surgeon’s failure to complete the procedure.
