A Patient's Story

Patients Consent Not Obtained For Operation

This patient underwent a surgical procedure for which she had not given her consent. Here she describes how Glynns helped her get the information and treatment she needed.

“I had a meeting with a consultant and agreed to have a certain type of surgical procedure. I was happy with the decision, but when I went back for the operation the surgeon didn't read any of the notes and he decided what procedure he wanted to do. Then it all went wrong.

I've been left emotionally upset by the experience. I don't trust the NHS and hardly ever go to the doctors now. I still don't like to really think about it and I haven't come to terms with what happened.

Afterwards my mum rang Glynns to ask about a claim, which is something I felt I had to do.

At the time the NHS was trying to make me undergo further surgery. They were trying to fix things because they knew they had made a mistake.

I didn't want the procedure they were trying to force on me, because it meant I would be left with the same condition. But I was told it was the only option.

Without Glynns, and especially without Lucy (one of the medical negligence solicitors), I wouldn't have discovered the other options available.

Lucy found a specialist consultant who could provide a different type of treatment, but he worked at a private hospital in the South East.

My Primary Care Trust (PCT) refused to pay for the operation because they said the hospital didn't fall within their district.

After a year of arguing, the PCT agreed to pay and I had the procedure. The surgeon said he couldn't believe what had happened to me and everyone at the hospital was so caring, they felt so sorry for me.

Without Lucy by my side, I wouldn't have ever met with this specialist surgeon, who gave me the right information and allowed me to have a say. Also I wouldn't have had reconstructive surgery.

During the course of my claim, it felt like I called Lucy every day. Never once was she rude. She was like a shoulder to cry on, which was nice to have.

Without her I wouldn't have got the help I needed. Going against the NHS was difficult – they didn't ever say sorry and refused to pay for any counselling.

But I am glad I made a claim because otherwise I wouldn't have found the support, information and reconstruction surgery that I needed.”
