Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, has described the funding of the NHS over the last twenty years as ‘crazy’ and ‘feast or famine’, as reported in The Times.

He called for a long-term approach to NHS funding in order to give hope to all those working in the health service under the current difficult conditions where nursing, doctor and midwife shortages are putting pressure on workers across the healthcare sector.

He further emphasised public support for increased funding of the NHS and a possible increase in taxes to provide this.

The winter crisis, with patients waiting for hours on trolleys due to overload in demand and shortage of staff is a prime example of the impact of under-funding and poor planning.

It is increased pressures such as these that cause mistakes to occur and it is patient safety which is put at risk.
