Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust Inquiry Findings
Over 900 people contributed to a report about the Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust published in March 2010. The main findings of the report were that patients were "routinely neglected by a Trust that was preoccupied with cost cutting, targets and processes and which lost sight of its fundamental responsibility to provide safe care".
The Build Up To The Report
The report was commissioned as a result of 400 more deaths than expected in Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust hospitals between 2005 and 2008, this despite the Trust being given 'Elite foundation trust status'.
Robert Francis QC, the barrister that prepared the report following his enquiry said:
"I heard so many stories of shocking care. These patients were not simply numbers they were husbands, wives, sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, grandparents. They were people who entered Stafford Hospital and rightly expected to be well cared for and treated. Instead, many suffered horrific experiences that will haunt them and their loved ones for the rest of their lives."
The report stated that patients were routinely neglected, such neglect including patients left in soiled sheets, patients crying out in pain who were given no attention, and even patients not being provided with enough food or drink.
There was a chronic shortage of staff which was largely responsible for the sub standard levels of care.
Significant changes have been made to staff at the Stafford Hospital so the inquiry did not recommend its' closure.
