GP Prescribing Errors

The General Medical Council has found that of the 900 million prescriptions made last year, 45 million contained errors. Of these, 1.6 million were considered to be 'severe', causing the patient unnecessary pain and suffering. In this article we take a closer look at this recently highlighted problem, explaining what we mean by a prescribing error, when an error might amount to medical negligence, and where to find further advice if you have been injured as a result of your GP's mistakes.

What is a prescribing error?

A prescribing error is when a patient is prescribed the wrong medication. The prescription may be deemed incorrect for a number of reasons, including:-

  • The patient is known to be allergic to it;
  • The patient has taken it for too long;
  • The incorrect dose is recommended;
  • The prescription should not be taken alongside the patient's other medication;
  • The wrong medication is prescribed.

When an error such as this does occur, it may not cause any problems for the patient in question. However, there are unfortunately occasions when a mistake leads to a series of health complications for the individual concerned which could otherwise have been avoided. If this does happen, the patient may be considered the victim of medical negligence.

Does a prescribing error amount to medical negligence?

If a GP prescribing error causes a patient to suffer an injury, there could be grounds for a medical negligence claim. One of the most common ways in which this may occur is if a GP fails to provide appropriate follow-up care. Many patients will need to be monitored while taking certain prescriptions to ensure that the correct dose is being taken and/or the prescription is not causing any harm. For example, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug capable of causing stomach bleeding if taken for too long, while the contraceptive pill can lead to high blood pressure. Therefore routine tests must be performed to guarantee the drug is not instigating additional health complaints.

A medical negligence claim may also arise if:-

  • The patient does undergo regular monitoring but the GP fails to assess test results;
  • A GP prescribes the wrong drug through lack of care and attention;
  • A GP lacks professional knowledge and prescribes a drug that will be harmful to the patient.

Claiming compensation for prescribing errors

If you have been injured because of a GP prescribing error, you could be entitled to compensation for the pain, suffering and financial loss you have been caused. To find out more, you need to contact a medical negligence solicitor as soon as possible. This will allow you to discuss your treatment with a legal professional who will then be able to suggest whether or not you have been the victim of medical negligence. If so, your solicitor can begin a claim on your behalf, helping you to obtain the compensation you rightfully deserve.
